Camels are usually led on foot by a camel driver, walking at an easy pace across the sand. No riding experience is needed.
Getting on and off is the only tricky moment. The camel kneels for you to climb into the saddle, then stands up back legs first — so lean back and hold on as it rises, and again as it kneels to let you down.
Late afternoon into sunset is the favourite time: the heat has eased, the shadows are long and the dunes glow. If you are staying at a desert camp, an early-morning ride has the same soft light and a cooler start.
The cooler months, roughly October to March, are the most comfortable. In summer, rides are best kept to the evening.
Camel rides are gentle enough for most travellers — couples, families, friends and solo travellers alike. If you have back problems, are pregnant or are travelling with very young children, mention it when you enquire so the plan suits everyone.
