Jodhpur City Tour

Jodhpur spreads out beneath one of Rajasthan's great forts. Founded by Rao Jodha in 1459, it is a city of blue-washed lanes, royal palaces and busy bazaars — and a natural companion to a Jaisalmer trip.

Our Jodhpur package

Our Jodhpur package combines a city tour with a hotel stay over two days. Like all our trips, it can be customised, or combined with Jaisalmer.

Places to see in Jodhpur

  • A palace courtyard of intricately carved sandstone balconies and arches, with a mirror-mosaic leopard sculpture in front

    Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh was founded by Rao Jodha in 1459 and sits on a rocky ridge high above Jodhpur. Behind its massive walls are palaces with finely carved stone panels and latticed windows, now home to a museum, and its ramparts look out over the blue houses of the old city.

  • The white marble memorial of Jaswant Thada in Jodhpur, with its carved central tower, wide steps and a fountain in the garden in front

    Jaswant Thada

Jaswant Thada is a white marble memorial built in 1899 in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. It stands a short distance from Mehrangarh Fort, surrounded by gardens, with views across to the fort and the city.

  • Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur: its sandstone dome and towers above a long facade, with a wide green lawn in front

    Umaid Bhawan Palace

Completed in 1943, Umaid Bhawan Palace is one of the world's largest private residences. Part of it is still the home of Jodhpur's former royal family, part is a hotel and part is a museum open to visitors.

  • The red sandstone clock tower at Sardar Market in Jodhpur, with Mehrangarh Fort on the hill behind it

    Clock Tower & Sardar Market

The Ghanta Ghar clock tower stands at the centre of Sardar Market, one of the old city's busiest bazaars, with stalls selling spices, textiles and handicrafts.

  • Tightly packed houses painted in shades of blue, with flat rooftops and water tanks, in the old city of Jodhpur

    The Blue City

Many houses in Jodhpur's old city are painted blue, which gives Jodhpur its nickname, the Blue City. The colour is best seen from the ramparts of Mehrangarh, or on foot in the narrow lanes below the fort.

Tips for your visit

  • Mehrangarh is on a steep hill — wear comfortable shoes.
  • Start at the fort in the morning, and leave the markets for later in the day.
