The route

Four stops through the Golden City

From the lake that kept the desert city alive, up into the living fort, and down to the merchants’ havelis — with your guide telling the stories on the way.

Detailed itinerary

Stop by stop

  1. Carved sandstone temples and ghats on Gadisar Lake at sunset, with rowing and pedal boats moored at a jetty and a chhatri standing in the water

    Stop 1 · Opening stop

    Gadisar Lake

Begin your tour at the peaceful banks of Gadisar Lake, built in the 14th century as the main water source for the desert city. Walk along the carved ghats, see the temples around the lake, and hear how this reservoir sustained desert life for centuries.

  2. The golden sandstone walls and bastions of Jaisalmer Fort on its hill above the old town, with the sun low on the horizon

    Stop 2

    Jaisalmer Fort

    2 hours at this stop

Step into one of the world’s few remaining “living forts”. Built in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal, the fortress houses nearly 4,000 residents within its massive ramparts.

    What you’ll see

    • The Royal Palace (Raj Mahal)
    • Jain temples from the 12th to 15th centuries
    • Narrow, winding alleys
    • Local craft shops
    • Sweeping views across the Thar Desert
  3. The carved golden-sandstone facade of Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli, looking up past its balconies to a blue sky, with a stone elephant by the entrance

    Stop 3

    Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli

    30 min at this stop

Visit this late 19th-century residence built for the city’s Prime Minister. It is famous for the story of its construction: two jeweller brothers, Hathi and Lullu, built the left and right wings at the same time.

    Architectural marvel

Because the brothers worked without a shared plan, the two halves are harmonious yet asymmetrical. Look for the carved elephants at the entrance, and wall engravings based only on travellers’ descriptions of life beyond the desert.

  4. The golden sandstone facade of Patwon Ki Haveli, covered in intricately carved jharokha balconies, against a blue sky

    Stop 4 · Final stop

    Kothari’s Patwon Ki Haveli

    45 min at this stop

Finish at the grandest mansion complex in Jaisalmer: five interconnected havelis commissioned by Guman Chand Patwa, a wealthy trader in textiles and precious metals, for his five sons.

    Architectural marvel

Built from golden sandstone, the outer wall is covered in delicate lattice screens (jaalis), made to show the family’s wealth to passers-by while keeping the rooms inside cool. Explore the inner courtyards, painted ceilings and antique artefacts that show the lavish life of 19th-century Jain merchants.
