Jaisalmer · The Golden City

Jaisalmer Sightseeing

Jaisalmer is built almost entirely from yellow sandstone, which is why it is called the Golden City. Its sights sit close together: a hilltop fort that people still live in, merchants' mansions carved like lace, and a historic lake on the edge of the old town.

Getting around

We arrange local sightseeing with a car and driver, so you can move between the sights at your own pace. Inside the fort and around the havelis, the lanes are narrow and best explored on foot.

Planning your day

Start early at the fort, before the day warms up and the lanes get busy. Gadisar Lake is at its calmest early in the morning or in the evening. If you are heading into the desert, the dunes are best in the late afternoon, so sightseeing in the city fits neatly into the morning.

Places to see in Jaisalmer

  • The golden sandstone walls and bastions of Jaisalmer Fort on its hill above the old town, with the sun low on the horizon

    Jaisalmer Fort

Jaisalmer Fort rises from Trikuta Hill above the city. It was founded in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal, after whom Jaisalmer is named, and is built from yellow sandstone that turns gold in the late afternoon — which is why it is known as Sonar Qila, the Golden Fort. It is one of the few forts in the world that is still lived in: homes, shops, guesthouses and a group of Jain temples fill its lanes. It is part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • The golden sandstone facade of Patwon Ki Haveli, covered in intricately carved jharokha balconies, against a blue sky

    Patwon Ki Haveli

Patwon Ki Haveli is a cluster of five havelis built in the 19th century for the family of Guman Chand Patwa, a wealthy merchant. It is the largest and most elaborate haveli in Jaisalmer, known for its intricately carved sandstone facades, balconies and jharokha windows. Parts of it are open to visitors as a museum.

  • Carved sandstone temples and ghats on Gadisar Lake at sunset, with rowing and pedal boats moored at a jetty and a chhatri standing in the water

    Gadisar Lake

Gadisar Lake is a man-made reservoir on the edge of the old city that once supplied Jaisalmer with water. Its banks are lined with ghats, small temples and chhatris — domed pavilions — and it is entered through the carved Tilon Ki Pol gateway. Early morning and evening, when the light is soft, are the calmest times to visit.

  • Rippled sand dunes at sunset, with the white tents of a desert camp among the trees

    Sam Sand Dunes

About 40 km west of Jaisalmer, the rolling dunes at Sam are the best-known stretch of the Thar Desert near the city. They are the classic setting for camel rides, jeep safaris, desert camps and sunsets over the sand.

Tips for your visit

  • Wear comfortable shoes — the fort's lanes are steep and paved in stone.
  • Dress modestly for visits to the Jain temples inside the fort.
  • Carry water and a hat; the sandstone reflects the heat.
