Desert Safari in Jaisalmer

The Thar Desert begins almost at Jaisalmer's edge. A desert safari brings it within reach in a single afternoon and evening: a camel ride or a jeep across the dunes, the sun going down over the sand, folk music at a desert camp and — if you stay — a night under an open desert sky.

What a desert safari can include

A desert safari is not one fixed activity. It is a combination of experiences, and you can choose how much of the desert you want to see. With us, it can bring together:

  • A camel safari over the dunes
  • A jeep safari for more pace and distance
  • Sunset — or sunrise, if you stay overnight
  • An evening cultural programme of Rajasthani folk music and dance
  • A night at a desert camp
  • Pickup and drop, with a car and driver

The dunes at Sam

About 40 km west of Jaisalmer, the rolling dunes at Sam are the best-known stretch of the Thar Desert near the city, and the setting most people imagine when they think of a Jaisalmer safari. The drive out takes you from the sandstone city through open scrubland until the dunes appear.

Camel or jeep?

Camels are slow, quiet and close to the sand — the traditional way to cross the desert and the gentlest option for most travellers. A jeep covers more ground, and the climb and drop over the dunes is a thrill in itself.

You don't have to choose: you can do both in the same trip, and our Jaisalmer packages can include either or both.

When to go

The cooler months, roughly October to March, are the most comfortable time for the desert. Summer days are very hot, so time spent on the dunes shifts to the late afternoon and evening.

Whatever the season, late afternoon into sunset is the classic time to be on the sand, when the light is soft and the dunes turn gold.

Tips for your visit

  • Sunglasses and a scarf or hat — sand and sun are strong, even late in the day.
  • Sunscreen and water, especially outside the cooler months.
  • Comfortable closed shoes or sandals that you don't mind filling with sand.
  • A warm layer between November and February: desert evenings and nights can get cold.
  • A bag or pouch to keep your phone and camera away from fine sand.
