Jaisalmer and Jodhpur in one trip: how to plan it

Jodhpur’s Blue City and Jaisalmer’s Golden City sit on the same road into the Thar Desert. How to combine them: getting between them, what to see and how many days to allow.

Jodhpur's old city seen from the hill: a sea of houses, many painted blue, stretching to the horizon

Why combine them

Jodhpur and Jaisalmer are natural partners. Jodhpur, the Blue City, is known for the vast Mehrangarh Fort and its blue-washed old town. Jaisalmer, the Golden City, rises out of the Thar Desert with a living sandstone fort and the dunes of Sam beyond it. Together they give you royal Rajasthan and the desert in one trip.

Getting between the two cities

The cities are roughly 280 km apart by road: around five to six hours by car, depending on stops. Trains also run between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer.

Jodhpur has a well-connected airport, which makes it a convenient place to start or end the trip. Jaisalmer has an airport too, but fewer flights, so check schedules for your dates.

We can arrange a car with a driver for the journey, and pickup and drop at airports and railway stations.

Which way round?

A common approach is to arrive in Jodhpur, see the city, then drive west to Jaisalmer for the fort and the desert, ending the trip with a night under the stars. The reverse works just as well if your flights or trains suit it better.

What to see in Jodhpur

  • Mehrangarh Fort, high above the city
  • Jaswant Thada, the white marble memorial near the fort
  • Umaid Bhawan Palace
  • The Clock Tower and Sardar Market
  • The blue houses of the old city

What to see in Jaisalmer

  • Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Qila), still lived in today
  • Patwon Ki Haveli and the carved havelis of the old city
  • Gadisar Lake
  • Sam Sand Dunes: safaris, sunset and a night at a desert camp

How many days to allow

Our Jaisalmer packages run from 2 to 4 days, and the Jodhpur city tour is 2 days. With time for the drive between them, about five to seven days lets you see both cities without rushing.

It is your trip, though: tell us how much time you have and we will plan it around you.
