Clothes: think in layers
The desert changes temperature fast. Light, breathable clothes are right for the day, but once the sun goes down you will want something warmer, especially in winter.
- Light cotton or linen clothes for the day
- A warm jacket or fleece for the evening
- Long, loose trousers for a camel ride
- Comfortable closed shoes, plus sandals for the dunes
Sun and sand protection
The sun is strong all year, and the desert air is dry.
- Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat or cap
- A scarf or stole to cover your face if the wind lifts the sand
- Lip balm and moisturiser
- A refillable water bottle
For a night at a desert camp
A night in the dunes is part of the experience, and a few small things make it more comfortable.
- A small torch or headlamp for after dark
- A power bank for your phone and camera
- Any regular medicines, and something for an upset stomach
- Earplugs, if you are a light sleeper
Cameras and phones
Fine sand gets into everything. Keep your phone and camera in a zip-lock bag or a case when you are not using them, and change lenses with your back to the wind.
Visiting the fort and temples
Jaisalmer Fort is a living fort, with homes, shops and a group of Jain temples inside its walls. Dress modestly for temple visits and be ready to take your shoes off. The Jain temples also ask visitors not to take leather items inside.
Money and documents
Carry some cash in small notes for markets and small purchases, and keep photo ID with you: hotels in India ask every guest for ID at check-in.
